Adaptive Power Control and Selective Radio Activation for Low-Power Infrastructure-Mode 802.11 LANs

چکیده
We present an integrated dual approach to reduce power consumption in infrastructure-mode 802.11 wireless LANs. A novel distributed power control algorithm adaptively adjusts the transmit power of the 802.11 radio/NIC to achieve power savings in the presence of mobility and RF noise. An adaptive radio activation algorithm selectively sleeps the 802.11 radio/NIC to reduce idle power consumption. We analyze the performance of these algorithms in an 802.11 testbed using Web traces of HTTP/TCP user data accesses. Our application-level architecture integrates the two approaches into an incrementally deployable and application-transparent solution for power management of the RF interface on 802.11-enabled laptops.

An Energy Efficient MAC Protocol for Wireless LANs
This paper presents an optimization of the power saving mechanism in the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11 standard. In the 802.11 power saving mode specified for DCF, time is divided into so-called beacon intervals. At the start of each beacon interval, each node in the power saving mode periodically wakes up for a duration called the ATIM Window. The nodes are required to...
متن کاملDynamic Data Rate and Transmit Power Adjustment in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs
In this paper a novel link adaptation algorithm is proposed that is capable of adjusting the transmit power level and the data rate jointly to the radio channel conditions. The proposed method relies solely on link quality information available at the transmitter by employing the reception or non-reception of the acknowledgment frames as a measure of the channel quality with respect to the powe...
متن کاملA microscopic study of power management in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks
IEEE 802.11 power saving mode (PSM) has been proposed in wireless LANs and multi-hop wireless networks to coordinate power states of wireless devices. In IEEE 802.11 PSM, power management decisions to wake up wireless devices or put them to sleep states are made periodically in every beacon interval. In this paper, we demonstrate via a rigorous, analytical model (the result of which is corrobor...
متن کاملAdaptive Sliding Mode Control of Multi-DG, Multi-Bus Grid-Connected Microgrid
This paper proposes a new adaptive controller for the robust control of a grid-connected multi-DG microgrid (MG) with the main aim of output active power and reactive power regulation as well as busbar voltage regulation of DGs. In addition, this paper proposes a simple systematic method for the dynamic analysis including the shunt and series faults that are assumed to occur in the MG. The pres...
متن کاملDon ’ t listen , talk : A comparative study of transmit and receive power for low power radios
In this paper we investigate the energy consumption of a low power radio device in its three modes of operation: transmission, reception and idle. We identify these modes of operation from the traces of the energy consumption of the device by modifying the device’s firmware to include and exclude certain events. We present energy consumption measurements two orders of magnitude lower than an 80...
